Each year, the TASH Conference strengthens the disability field by connecting attendees to innovative information and resources, facilitating connections between stakeholders within the disability movement, and helping attendees reignite their passion for an inclusive world. This year’s conference theme, “Gateway to Equity,” explores inclusive communities, schools, and workplaces that support people with disabilities, including those with complex support needs, in living a fair, just, and balanced life. Individuals with significant disabilities who type to communicate attain levels of inclusion far greater than their peers who do not have reliable, effective means to communicate. Exploring the experiences of independent typists will create an in-depth understanding of how independent communication can be achieved for people with significant disabilities. Objectives:
Participants will distinguish the differences between traditional prompting and supported typing for the purpose of communicating.
Participants will identify various challenges in the process of acquiring independent typing skills for the purpose of communicating.
Participants will recognize the viability of facilitated and supported typing to support people in their journey of acquiring reliable, effective and efficient means of communication.
