Visual phonics is an intervention that was developed to teach learners with hearing impairments phonics and phonemic awareness, Due to the multi-modality of the intervention, its efficacy amongst other populations of learners has been explored. The focus of this session is to present the findings of a meta-analytical study on using visual phonics as a language/reading intervention for varying populations of learners with severe disabilities. Effect sizes show that this intervention is effective for learners with severe disabilities in addition to those with hearing impairments. Strategies for including this intervention in language/reading instruction shall also be discussed. After this session participants shall be able to: a) understand the benefits and efficacy of implementing visual phonics as a tool for teaching reading and language development for multiple populations, b) identify the main components of a visual phonics intervention, c) implement, with fidelity, said intervention for varying population of learners, and d) identify 7-10 resources for developing a curriculum to teach visual phonics.
